We have been told and have found for ourselves that N'Timidator is one of the best Boer Goat feeds on the market - particularly for show stock. This feed is distributed by Land 'O Lakes in the Midwest. This is probably the most versatile feed and the easiest to feed to all body-type and maturity-rate show goats. There are several other high quality feeds that we have personally run trials on and can attest to their performance: Fast Forward Goat Grits, manufactured by ADM and Hackman Brothers Boer Goat Developer and Finisher are three very good feeds.
Goat mineral is extremely important and is becoming easier to find as the major feed manufacturers increase their attention to goats, and the Boer Goat, in particular. Most feed research programs are beginning to include Boer Goats in their research. We sell the Hackman/Albion Goat Mineral, Land 'O Lakes Premier Goat Mineral, and Purina Show Chow Goat Mineral. It is very important that breeding does, in particular, get mineral - however, all goats need mineral.
Substituting for High Cost Feed Products:
Because of recent shortages in some products, and outlandish prices of others, many breeders are searching for alternative feed sources. It is important to be very careful when experimenting with different grains, etc - it is best to involve an unbiased nutritionist in your analysis of different products.
We have developed a feed that appears to be working very well - at least for our breeding herd.
There are a lot of fiber replacement products being sold: we're using soy hulls and oat replacer pellets for some of the fiber in our rations. We are limit feeding hay to our goats and have substituted corn stalks, enhanced with molasses.
It is very important to know the body-style and maturity rate of your goats when selecting feed and deciding on a total feeding program.
